Agency Narrative
The Illinois State Police (ISP) is a full-service, nationally accredited law enforcement agency and has served the state since 1922. Uniform and plain-clothes officers respond to reports of crime and calls for assistance, perform community policing, and serve as the state’s first line of defense against the illegal drug trade. The ISP ensures a safer Illinois by strategically patrolling more than 20,000 miles of highway to reduce traffic crashes and provide assistance to the public. Across the state, specially trained Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams and canine units provide aid and assistance at a wide range of incidents. The ISP operates its own aircraft fleet to search for missing persons, recover fugitives, spot illegal marijuana fields, and help enforce traffic laws. The Illinois State Police also staff the ISP Academy, which is used to train all newly hired personnel and many local agency trainees. Investigators use advanced techniques and equipment to investigate serious crimes such as homicide, sexual assault, fraud, and forgery. ISP Forensics personnel collect and process evidence that is vital to the successful investigation and prosecution of criminal cases, and the ISP operates a vast system of modern forensics laboratories throughout the state. Additionally, the Illinois State Police investigate allegations of illegality in government, including executive departments, commissions, and boards. The Illinois State Police is respected nationwide for progressive law enforcement, and the ISP ranks as the first state police agency in the nation to receive accreditation from the prestigious Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Each day, ISP personnel strive to attain the department’s motto:“Integrity, Service, and Pride.”
