Explanatory Information
The State Fairs provide opportunities for agricultural awareness through family-oriented events, entertainment, and attractions and promotes the State’s leading industry. The State Fairs attract visitors from outside the State and generate a significant economic impact both regionally and statewide. In addition, the State Fairground facilities are available for rental by the public and used to stage various events that generate additional revenue to assist with maintaining the facilities on the State Fairgrounds. Both 2020 State Fairs were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concern for public health and safety, but State Fair attendance rebounded for both fairs in 2021 (fiscal year 2022).
Fair data is being presented on the Fair Fiscal Year, which runs from October to September annually. Metrics are presented in this manner due to be able to present the most current Fair expenditures and data available. For example, the 2021 State Fairs occur during fiscal year 2022 and if reported strictly on a fiscal year basis, the figures would not be reported until submission of the fiscal year 2022 Public Accountability Report. In addition, some metrics such as the number of Fair attendees are reported in the same manner in the Consolidated Annual Financial Report published by the Illinois Office of Comptroller.
