Explanatory Information
The Bureau of Weights & Measures (Bureau) ensures fair and equitable trade practices by the business community with Illinois consumers by inspecting and testing for accuracy all weighing and measuring devices used in commercial transactions. The Bureau evaluates the quality of gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, propane, and other petroleum products offered for sale. It also tests the accuracy of all commercial scales, from grocery stores to transport trucks, and the accuracy of the output of fuel pumps. The variances experienced during fiscal year 2020, both decrease and increase compared to the preceding and succeeding fiscal years, respectively, were due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a temporary suspension of inspections. When inspections resumed, the sanitation and other COVID-19 mitigation processes increased the amount of time per inspection.
