Public Accountability Report

Governors State University (GovState) was founded in 1969, originally as an upper-division institution with a primary focus of serving community college graduates pursuing baccalaureate degrees. During the five intervening decades, GovState has grown to become the only regional, public, comprehensive university in Chicago’s south suburban area, serving approximately 5,000 students annually in 85 different bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs. GovState features a highly diverse faculty and staff of roughly 1,000 employees that reflect the students and community we serve. GovState provides accessible, high-value undergraduate and graduate education to culturally and economically diverse students from across the region and around the world. GovState is at the beginning stages of developing a Student Enrollment Management Plan to assist with managing the financial objectives that support both equity and equality. Similarly, the university is also developing a new five-year strategic plan that will encompass long-term and short-term goals. This plan will help to define goals and initiatives moving forward to support outcomes for the university, including retention goals for students and employees.
