Agency Narrative
Major Results
Fall 2025 enrollment totaled 5,337 students. Nearly 1,300 new students enrolled, with strong retention efforts yielding 197 returning "stop-out" students. WIU earned U.S. News & World Report rankings (#57 Midwest Regional Universities, top public in Illinois for opportunity via Carnegie classification), conducted successful fundraising (e.g., Western Challenge), and earned recognition for social mobility and veteran support.
Challenges
Enrollment declined ~16% year-over-year, continuing a multi-year trend driven by demographic shifts, out-migration, competition, and financial pressures (including low state funding adequacy and budget deficits requiring prior adjustments).
Strategies for Improvement
WIU focused on student persistence and re-enrollment, expanded scholarships/financial aid, strengthened high-demand programs, enhanced recruitment for transfers and non-traditional students, and adjusted operations for sustainability at lower enrollment levels (~6,000 - 6,500 long-term target).
